novillada

bull.jpg

I am cheating by dipping into the tapes that sit in plastic bins in my closet.

Some years ago I was in Cinchon, Spain (a small town near Madrid) for a summer festival. A novillada is a bullfight with young matadors (15 or 16, fresh out of bullfighting school) and young bulls.

In the editing I try to break down the elements of what this bullfight means – a right of passage, a gathering of generations, a bloody and cruel ritual. I can’t judge this, it’s not my culture. But I am both fascinated and sickened.

Not for everyone.

Wow – that was really amazing. I’ve never seen anything like that before. Great work – good story telling – I was right there.
