Soluble Fish :: digital poetics

Infinite Resolution

I am very happy shooting video with my Canon Powershot S410. Fits nice in the hand. People don’t know you’re taking video. Good sound and really great optics. A camera good for vogging and for family shots.

And then I put together a little iMovie of my kids. Burned a DVD. I was amazed. Even projected, the video shot on the Canon looked pretty good with its 15 FPS and 320 x 240 resolution. Clarity has a lot to do with the lens, depth of field and color separation. Resolution is secondary to my eyes.

I love film, dreamy black and white and technicolor of the past. But these days I experience “film” on a DVD with 500 lines of res. Same as a minidv tape. I recently worked with color and contrast on some minidv with nattress filters ($100 to download). It made the video look very good (I hesitate to say “like film”).

Of course, as you increase image size for a big theater – lines of resolution makes a huge difference. But for home projection? Who needs the HDTV? The 24p cameras and anamorphic squeeze.

Some day, digital images will have infinite resolution, be infinitely scalable. Which means that movies will be shot on a palm held camera. So we should get used to making ‘features” (or some other commodified narrative) on the powershot and not worry about resolution.

You go first.
